![]() ![]() ![]() Chadwick's movie shows him cheating on his first wife, neglecting his infant son and smoking like a chimney. He's a militant firebrand, the scourge of the state. It is during these moments that the film catches Mandela at his most knotty and raw. Outraged by the death of a drunk in police custody, he becomes involved in the ANC struggle against apartheid, burning his identity papers and shuttling between safe houses. Mandela (superbly embodied by the British actor Idris Elba) starts out as a wily young lawyer, audaciously defending a domestic servant accused of stealing her mistress's knickers. To misquote John Huston in Chinatown, "Ugly buildings, whores and Nelson Mandela – they all get respectable if they last long enough."Īdapted by William Nicholson from Mandela's 1995 autobiography, the film is at its best in its urgent opening half, when it charts the political education of its subject against a backdrop of hysterical institutionalised racism. But Long Walk to Freedom, although made with rigour and intelligence, is largely content to print the legend and tidy the tensions. At various stages of his turbulent life, Mandela inspired fear and loathing, adoration and awe. Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom is a conservative film about a radical man, a movie so bowed down by the weight of responsibility that it occasionally trudges when you wish it would dance. ![]()

Along with a handful of other women - Barbara Walters, Diane Sawyer, Connie Chung, Oprah Winfrey - Couric was one of the people who determined how American television audiences understood the world. At the peak of her fame at the turn of the millennium, which coincided with the heyday of the Today show and the primacy of the morning network-news program, she enjoyed near-unrivaled power. That career would wind up being a blockbuster. The carrots were on account of the Scarsdale Diet, the deprivational fad to which the 22-year-old Couric had committed because her plan “was to look as good as possible for my wet hot American summer” before “finding a job - maybe even a career - in TV news.” In the weeks before the publication of her memoir, Going There, Katie Couric and I would play a dark little game called Funny or Fucked Up? Over coffee, lunch, and Zoom calls, I would bring up an anecdote from the book - like, say, the first sentence, which is about the time she ate so many carrots in the summer after college that her skin turned orange - and ask her what, exactly, her reader was supposed to make of it. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() (She retired from the publishing industry in 2011.) She also had a robust and enviable social circle, which Julia, for whatever reason, decided not to dive into just yet. Looking back through a modern lens, we know Jones didn’t heed Knopf’s missive and continued to work with her close friend Child and a bevy of other culinary authors for the remainder of her career. “I own the block.” And the block does not value her contributions to poultry, vegetables, or sauces despite the book sales speaking for themselves. “I’ve been around the block, Judith,” Blanche spits at her. Never mind that Judith also edits the likes of Albert Camus, Anne Frank, and Jean-Paul Sartre. As this week’s episode confirms, Judith is the preeminent woman editor in the country, yet her boss, the renowned Blanche Knopf (Judith Light), thinks she’s “squandering” her legacy by having an editing dalliance with cookbooks. Halfway through Julia’s sixth episode, Judith Jones, Julia Child’s fabulously shrewd and stylish editor, treats our ears to some culinary poetry of her own: “Food makes me feel creative.” Yes, the woman (wonderfully portrayed by Irish actor Fiona Glascott) just spent a week trying to crack a bread recipe in a burning-hot kitchen. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I’ve seen the mouth of the universe open to devour the stars.
